📝📝📝 "They call themselves ‘geezers’, 📝📝📝 "They call themselves ‘geezers’, and a geezer is outside the hangar now, pressing his face to the window then peering through a chink in the curtain covering the door, trying his security pass and pushing the door, flitting from one to the other like a persistent dog trying to get attention. I recognise him immediately – it’s Christopher ‘Kip’ Formby, the chief instructor whose gravelly Northern Irish accent makes ‘How are you?’ sound like a death threat. He’s ignoring the ‘Closed’ sign on the door, because he thinks that sort of thing doesn’t apply to him. I hear a beep as his pass is pressed against the security pad, a push of the door, then the beep, beep again. Another push, then a rattle. I have the key and, for now, the power." 📝📝📝 Intrigued? This is an SAS story like no other, told by an insider on the outside... Monica spent three years working in the kitchens and then in the store rooms at the Hereford SAS garrison, and got to know the soldiers as people first, rather than by their fearsome reputation, hearing all about their everyday problems and discovering their quirks. This book tells the stories of the soldiers as they were told to her – full frontal (sometimes literally - warning, contains nudity!) and no holds barred. It's frank, funny, fresh and compassionate and we're so excited to be publishing it. The third Monday of the January is supposedly the The third Monday of the January is supposedly the gloomiest day of the year. And, particularly during the current lockdown, we realise that life can feel a little lonely at times. But here at Orphans we're trying to fight those January Blues! Reading can act as a wonderful escapism from loneliness. While reading may be a solitary activity, picking up your favourite book, or reading a new novel, can really alleviate the feeling of isolation. I've written a short blog post about the power of reading and how it can help us escape loneliness, so head over to our website to check it out. What are your favourite books that give you good feelings? We'd love to know - recommend us something! #BlueMonday #JanuaryBlues #BookLovers #BookAddict #Reading #Books #Fiction #NonFiction #Blog
So, 2021 may not have begun quite how we'd wished So, 2021 may not have begun quite how we'd wished for on New Year's Eve - a quiet January is one thing, but a lockdown rather a different sort of quiet - but we refuse to be gloomy. As they say, hope springs eternal. And whilst it's been a bit quiet over here on our social media too, that's about to change. Help is at hand from Hannah, who's got the keys to the account for a little while to keep her busy, so please do say hello! We've got plenty of things to look forward to this year, and we're excited to share them with you. There's a new novel set in the city of dreaming spires from @andygriffee - #crimefiction fans and #canalboat enthusiasts won't want to miss it.
We're currently in the middle of a mass mailing for the fresh, funny and unique memoir of one woman's time behind the scenes on camp with the #SAS - if you've ever wondered what elite soldiers are like on their day off, you're in for a treat.
And in the meantime we're also happy to be giving a bit of behind-the-scenes help ourselves to the superstar team @myrealgarden as they launch their crowdfunded lockdown #gardening book in March. #toobusytobebored #happynewyear #booksgloriousbooks
And finally, Number 12 - not yet published but we And finally, Number 12 - not yet published but we are very excited that in March 2021 we get to take you inside the closed world of GEEZERS: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, ON CAMP WITH THE SAS. This unique memoir describes one woman's time spent working behind the scenes for the world famous 22 Special Air Service Regiment in Hereford. Monica Lavers spent three years with a ringside view of how these ‘geezers’, as they often refer to themselves, live, work and play. Getting to know them as people first, rather than by their fearsome reputation, she offers a behind-the scenes look at life on camp that is by turns frank, funny and compassionate. Warning - contains nudity! Get ready, we think you're going to love this one as much as we do. #geezers #upcloseandpersonal #sas #hereford #preorder
Day 11 of our Twelve Days of Christmas is Carly Ti Day 11 of our Twelve Days of Christmas is Carly Tinkler’s brilliant Black Dog Sunday. Part unconventional love story, part tragedy, Black Dog Sunday is a debut novel with heart and compassion, and filled with hope for the future. We’re delighted to be offering this ebook in support of some brilliant UK charities that work with communities who might be finding the lockdown during the pandemic particularly tough. Karma Nirvana, Roshni Birmingham and The Sharan Project all inspired the author in her research into issues affecting the characters in the novel and all profits will be split equally between them.
