“Henry Stanley [and his wife, Mary Anna] had mad “Henry Stanley [and his wife, Mary Anna] had made a great contribution to the life and ideals of the town and built better than they knew” Happy birthday, Henry Stanley Newman! 🥳 On this day in 1837, the founder of Orphans Press was born. His Quaker values meant he was modest about his achievements, but we couldn’t be prouder to continue his legacy. From his efforts in the local area through his dedication to the First Day School in Leominster (an adult-education initiative, at which he taught right up until his passing), and further afield in his tireless support of anti-slavery campaigns, his was a life that left the world a better place. If you’d like to learn more about his remarkable life, keep an eye out for some exciting news in the coming weeks!
Happy Earth Day! 🌍 As a countryside-based publ Happy Earth Day! 🌍 As a countryside-based publisher with an office space that’s surrounded by nature, we‘re always reminded of how important it is to have a positive impact on our environment. From the solar panels on our building’s roof, to the FSC paper on which our stories are printed, we’re proud to say that for the Orphans team, every day is Earth Day 🌱
INTRODUCING... our new Editorial Assistant! 🐾 INTRODUCING... our new Editorial Assistant! 🐾 After a successful career chasing rabbits, our hairiest office pal has decided to take on a new endeavour to line his furry pockets. From today, Ted will be joining Debbie in the editorial team, and is actively looking for new titles to join his list. Whether you've written the perfect guide to tummy scritches, or a nuanced look into the history of the Bonio, Ted wants to hear from you!
Hooray! We were beyond excited to see our author T Hooray! We were beyond excited to see our author Tamsin Westhorpe in HortWeek's list of 100+ leading women in horticulture for 2023. For those who aren't familiar, when Tamsin is away from her writing desk she's a hands-on gardener at Stockton Bury (the setting for her fascinating Diary of a Modern Country Gardener, which is just down the road from Orphans HQ), public speaker, podcaster and RHS judge. So although we were thrilled, we weren't surprised to see her featured. Her latest book, Grasping the Nettle, is a love letter to the horticultural industry and all its weird and wonderful opportunities - click the link in our bio to find out more. 📸: @nmoyowilson
Baking with Katie and Tamsin - part 2 👩‍🍳 Baking with Katie and Tamsin - part 2 👩‍🍳 The results are in! This weekend we tried out Mary Berry’s recipe for holiday banana cake, to celebrate Diary of a Modern Country Gardener being named as her bedside read! We’re so chuffed with how the cake turned out - if you’d like to try your hand at this ever-so-easy recipe, go to p274 of her book Foolproof Cooking. And make sure you tag us in your attempts, we’d love to see! You can read the full interview with Mary in the April issue of @idealhomeuk - and get your copy of Diary of a Modern Country Gardener (out now in paperback and hardback) through the link in our bio 📚 #bakingtherapy #saturdaybaking #weekendbakingclub #lucyyoungagacakes #countrygardening #gardeninghandbook #bedsidereads
