Hereford Is Heaven and Other Verses

Hereford Is Heaven and Other Verses by Geoffrey Bright is a charming and gently entertaining collection of poetry which has been out of print for too long.

I know a land that still remains
Untouched by man’s unrest
A haven in a shattered world
A sanctuary of rest
Her scenery beyond compare
A climate soft and wild
Wooded valleys, crystal streams
And windswept hilltops mild

Despite having first been published in 1948, just after the Second World War, the subjects and places featured in the poems hardly seem to have changed at all, as befits the reputation of a county that’s a hidden gem ‘half a world away’.

Geoffrey Bright (1895 – 1980) was a Herefordshire man through and through – a decorated war veteran and successful businessman, his heart lay not in the city but in the countryside he loved. With humorous poems about evergreen subjects close to a Herefordian’s heart, such as cider, cattle and the river drainage situation, as well as more pensive poetry about what makes the county so special, we are delighted to bring this small collection back to delight new generations.
